Canyoning is an exciting and sometimes intense activity, which is not necessarily suitable if someone in the group suffers from a fear of heights. It can feel like a powerful experience and gives you a sense of freedom and being part of nature.
At Sjoa Familierafting, the trip takes place in a regulated river gorge. That's what makes it possible for us to do canyoning here. We follow and explore the gorge as it is, by light climbing, abseiling, swimming in pools and jumping from cliffs.
Participants are equipped with a helmet, lifejacket, and wetsuit. Regardless of the activity, safety is a key theme at Sjoa Familierafting. This means that all participants are thoroughly instructed by our experienced guides both before we start the trip and during the trip. See video from our family canyoning.
Canyoning is a fun and challenging experience. When you climb up and rappel down, swim in pools and jump from cliffs, you really feel alive. It’s a great feeling to use your body in many different ways, while you have to concentrate on being in the moment and enjoying the incredible nature around you.
At Sjoa Familierafting, we tailor the trip to each group of participants so that we do not give you challenges that exceed your wishes and abilities. We use different gorges, depending on the water level and desired degree of difficulty. As a participant, you decide for yourself how spectacular you want the experience to be. Canyoning is not an activity for those afraid of heights. Please note that you must arrange your own transport from Varphaugen to the starting point for the gorge. If you are unable to transport yourself, just contact us and we will find a solution.
Canyoning can be a cold experience, so make sure you wear warm non cotton clothes under the wetsuit you borrow from us. We recommend thermals or base layers, we point out that this will get wet on the trip.
As the name suggests, Sjoa Familierafting focuses on family activities for families with children up to the age of 15. At Sjoa Familierafting, you can do a lot more than just go canyoning. If you would like to try other water activities, we offer both family rafting and SUP. It is also possible explore our camp with fishing, or swimming in the river. We also have a wonderful sandy beach. If you want to do something that doesn’t involve water, we can recommend a trip to Sjoa Climbing Park, go on the adventure trail or challenge other family members to a game of pentathlon. Pentathlon involves activities such as sack races, puzzles, tin bowling and ball in basket, to name a few.
Make your own meals – or let us do it
When you get hungry, you can either use our simple guest kitchen to cook, you can grill, or you can buy simple meals such as pizza or waffles. If you want us to serve meals during your stay, we recommend that these be ordered in advance. We serve breakfast, lunch and a child-friendly two-course dinner.
Get a good night’s sleep
To gather energy for a day of canyoning, you need a good night’s sleep. At Sjoa Familierafting, we offer various types of accommodation. For those who want to explore the outdoors, it is possible to live in lavvu on the banks of Gudbrandsdalslågen. It is an enjoyable experience that brings you even closer to nature.
We have cozy cabins with bunk beds and enough space for a family of up to five people. All cabins are equipped with a fridge and a small table so you can choose to eat in the cabin.
We also have a nice family room of approx. 30m2 with two double beds, dining area, fridge, kettle and a sink. There is room for an extra bed, should there be a need for this. The family room is on the second floor of Nordre Stuggu, a beautiful house from 1745 with a view of both the area and Gudbrandsdalslågen. Nordre Stuggu is located centrally, close to the sanitary facility.
If you have any questions, please contact us and we will be happy to share our experiences with you. We are sure to provide you with an unforgettable experience at Sjoa Familierafting.
We use different gorges depending on the desired degree of difficulty and water level. The participants individually decide how spectacular the canyoning should be. Canyoning is not an activity suitable for those who are anxious about heights.
We use a gorge in Vågå, and guests are free to travel onwards after the trip. This makes sense if you are going further west, or if you have thought about driving to Valdresflya. You then change into dry clothes by the car after the trip, and the guides bring the equipment back to the camp.
